More Projects From 2009:

CABIN FEVER - CURED!

For those of you who have followed us over the past couple of years, you know how much we enjoy working on 'theme' rooms. We recently completed a beauty we dubbed, 'The Adirondack Room.' Another great example of watching a client's vision come to fruition.

It all began with a love for the great outdoors. Our client completed a huge addition over their garage just a year earlier and now wanted to complete the transformation by creating a fun and relaxed space for her three boys to just 'hang out.' Earlier in the project she commissioned a custom woodworker to add paneling, built in bookcases and 20' beams. The beams were distressed and antiqued with stain, chisels and a few hammers and chains. Yet, the room still 'missed the mark.' That's when our phone rang.

When I first looked at the room, I saw large patches of white ceiling between the beautiful beams and crisp white trim and closet doors -- hardly a log cabin feel. I knew exactly what we needed to do -- the space need to be warmed up while adding texture and dimension.

We began by applying a Sandstone finish on the ceiling. Sandstone is a decorating plaster that creates a "sandy" texture that can be scraped or sanded to bring out the embedded textures hidden within. Once the Sandstone was applied we custom tinted a glaze with yellow ochre and brown and applied an overglaze coat. The result really brought out the beauty in the beams.

Next, we tackled the six panel closet door. We used a trompe l'oeil technique on the doors to create the look of an old salvaged barn door -- complete with cross boards and several layers of 'peeling paint.' We applied the same finish on the moldings of the seven large windows.
While our slogan may be 'transforming walls into works of art,' perhaps this time it was really "From Rompus to Rustic!"
