Top 5 Tips for selecting Artistic Tile

We are introducing a new article to our newsletter. We have the privilege of working with a number of very talented designers and contractors throughout the New York Metro area.

In this article, we speak with Joe Somma of Somma Designs (http://sommadesigns.com/). Joe specializes in high end custom tile installation as well as assisting clients in tile designs.

Joe gives us his Top 5 Tips for selecting artistic tile:

Tip #1 - Design:
Prior to choosing a design, it is important to keep in mind that the kind of tile & location of installation is just as important as the design itself. For example: polished stones in high traffic areas will dull quickly but may be just fine on your backsplash. Once the material is chosen, we can incorporate types of patterns, borders, colors & other techniques to create a custom design that reflects your personal taste.

Tip #2 - Application:
Each tile project within your home or business may require different methods of preparation and installation. When working with floors and walls that are out of plumb and level, it may be more challenging and require more prep work to create a superior installation.

Tip #3 - Something Else:

One of the most important things to consider with a tile project is budget. Tile products can range from $1.00 per foot to $100.00 and up per foot! Also the square footage of your project ties directly into your budget. For example you may want to splurge on a backsplash of 20 square feet at $30 per foot, where you would not want to spend $30 per foot for a 1,000 square foot basement floor. All things to keep in mind prior to tile shopping for your project. Certain tile suppliers may carry a more specific product for your project & budget. Some carry products for the budget minded & practical applications while others may have more products that are design focused rather than budget.

Tip #4 - Something more:
The cost of installation depends on the type of project, materials, the design and the location of the install. Some patterns are more labor intensive & require more skilled cuts to complete the design.

Tip #5 -Final thought:
